Tank driving in Alresford
If it’s adventure you crave, a tank-driving experience day at Tichborne Down, Alresford, could be just the thing. Come for the day and stay for the night — the driving centre is just a few minutes away from the Pink House Bed & Breakfast.
There are three vehicles at the Tichborne Down centre, all of them tough military machines. Weighing in at 55 tonnes, the mighty Chieftain tank boasts a 12-cylinder multi-fuel Rolls Royce engine that delivers 750 horsepower. The Chieftain was once the workhorse of the British army, and was exported to Iran, Kuwait and Oman. The Abbot self-propelled gun (SPG) also has a long history of service in the British Army, which used it until 1995. Finally, the FV432 armoured personnel carrier (APC) was used by the British Army in the 1950s.
The tank-driving experience begins with a briefing from expert instructors, some of whom have driven these machines in real combat environments. Only then will you be ready to tackle the course yourself!
The centre also offers the chance to take a spin on a quad bike. Previous driving experience is not required, but drivers must be over the age of sixteen.
